Darren Shan's early life started in South East London near the Elephant and Castle. He started school at the age of 3 and had trouble finding a pre-school that would take him because he was such a "wild child". He moved to Limerick at the age of 6 and has lived there ever since. At the age of 15, he was a runner-up in a television script writing competition. He finished his first novel at the age of 23.
